Accelerating Restoration Planning for Maximum Impact

CIERA (Conservation International Ecosystem Restoration Assistant) was created to solve a key challenge in restoration planning: identifying where restoration will have the greatest impact.

Traditionally, this process could take months of analyzing maps, reports, and models. With CIERA, it will take minutes.

The tool integrates geospatial data with public policy, environmental regulations, and scientific research to identify high-priority restoration areas. It also allows users to customize priorities—such as carbon storage, biodiversity, water, or livelihoods—based on local needs.

The event, part of Microsoft’s Global Nonprofit Leaders’ Summit, brought together NGOs, developers, students, and technology partners to design AI-powered solutions for real-world challenges. Conservation International’s winning entry, CIERA, was developed in collaboration with Microsoft, Esri, the University of Maryland, Utah State University, and threshold.world.
