High Andean ecosystems, including peatlands, wetlands, grasslands, and relict forests

Peru’s high Andean ecosystems are facing increasing pressure. These landscapes are essential for biodiversity, water provision, and carbon storage, but have been degraded by poor land management and the impacts of climate change. The project aims to restore these ecosystems and recover the services they provide to both nature and people.

Restoration ambition

The project aims to restore critical ecosystems in the high Andes through an integrated approach. It addresses institutional, financial, and knowledge barriers to scale up restoration, with a focus on sustainability and local livelihoods through the integration of value chains and strengthened community capacities.

The project will create enabling conditions by developing inclusive policies, establishing multi-stakeholder platforms, and raising stakeholder awareness.

Restoration efforts will include direct interventions, sustainable management practices, and innovative financing mechanisms. Knowledge management will be supported through capacity building, knowledge exchange, and participation in global dialogue.

How Peru
will achieve this

Peru is focusing its restoration efforts in the high Andean regions of Pasco-Junín, Ancash, and Nor-Yauyos—areas vulnerable to environmental degradation and climate change. The project brings together direct interventions, sustainable management, financial innovation, and knowledge sharing to support long-term ecosystem recovery.

  • Sustainable Management Practices

The project will implement direct restoration interventions using participatory, inclusive, and gender-transformative approaches. Sustainable management practices will be applied across targeted landscapes.

  • Financing and Business Development

To support restoration at scale, the project will mobilize public, private, and cooperative funds. It will also develop protocols to improve access to credit for restoration and sustainable management activities. Business plans will be designed and implemented to support the restoration and sustainable use of agrobiodiversity products.

  • Knowledge and Capacity Building

An inclusive, gender-sensitive knowledge management and communication strategy will guide the sharing of information and practices. A capacity-building program will be rolled out across public institutions and communities to strengthen technical skills and institutional readiness.

  • Engagement and Learning

The project will enhance employability and engagement by fostering interaction within the learning community of the Ecosystem Restoration Integrated Program. This approach supports continuous learning and collaboration across regions and sectors.
