Forests and agro-sylvopastoral

In Chad’s Mayo-Kebbi Ouest region, restoration efforts are focusing on forests and agro-sylvopastoral systems. These ecosystems support biodiversity, regulate climate, and provide essential services to local communities. The project will concentrate on enhancing carbon sequestration and promoting the sustainable management of these landscapes.

Restoration Ambition

In the Mayo-Kebbi Ouest region, the project is working to restore and maintain ecosystem services by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing carbon sequestration in forests and agro-sylvopastoral systems. These efforts contribute to national and global goals for climate change mitigation, land restoration, and sustainable forest management.

The project will strengthen local governance and build capacity for sustainable natural resource management. It will also maintain ecological continuity of forest blocks through sustainable ecosystem management and promote income-generating activities to enhance community resilience to climate change.

A Geographic Information System (GIS) will be implemented to monitor vegetation cover. In addition, the project will promote sustainable land management practices and agroforestry, and establish public-private-community partnerships to support long-term ecosystem management.

Key Partners and Roles

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is responsible for implementing the project, while the Ministry of Environment, Water and Fisheries (MEPDD) leads its execution. Local communities are engaged in sustainable natural resource management and income-generating activities. Public-private-community partnerships play a role in facilitating sustainable ecosystem management. Governmental and non-governmental institutions support governance and capacity building throughout the project.

How Chad
will achieve this

In the Mayo-Kebbi Ouest region, the project will apply a set of coordinated approaches to restore degraded ecosystems and improve land management. These efforts will be tailored to the region’s diverse ecosystems and biodiversity, using integrated methods to support long-term sustainability.

  • Local Governance

The project will focus on strengthening local governance and building capacity for sustainable natural resource management, ensuring that communities are equipped to lead and maintain restoration efforts.

  • Ecosystem Management

Maintaining the ecological continuity of forest blocks will be a priority, supported by sustainable ecosystem management practices and the promotion of agroforestry and sustainable land use.

  • Community Resilience

Income-generating activities will be developed to support local livelihoods, while also enhancing community resilience to climate change through targeted interventions.

  • Monitoring and Partnerships

A Geographic Information System (GIS) will be implemented to monitor vegetation cover. Public-private-community partnerships will be established to support sustainable ecosystem management and long-term collaboration.
