Restoration for Climate Adaptation Training

The Restoration for Climate Adaptation Training is an online learning opportunity for ecosystem restoration practitioners interested in strengthening the climate adaptation dimension of their work. It provides a shared space to build understanding, exchange experiences, and explore how ecosystem restoration can support people in adapting to climate change.

Delivered under the Ecosystem Restoration Program, the training brings together practitioners working across regions and contexts to reflect on practice, learn from peers, and apply adaptation concepts to real restoration initiatives.

About this Training

This training focuses on ecosystem restoration as a Nature-based Solution (NbS) for climate change adaptation. It introduces key climate adaptation concepts and situates restoration within broader adaptation and resilience efforts, with a strong emphasis on people-centered outcomes.

Through a series of four interactive online sessions, participants will engage with practical examples, guided discussions, and applied exercises that support reflection on their own project contexts. The trainers will also be available to exchange directly with participants after each module.

Why this Training?

Climate change is already affecting ecosystems and the people who depend on them. This training responds to the growing need for practical guidance on how restoration can contribute to climate adaptation, while also delivering multiple social and environmental benefits.

The training provides information about:

  • The importance of climate adaptation and the need to adapt to climate change.
  • Nature-based Solutions for climate change adaptation of people.
  • Ecosystem restoration as a type of NbS for climate adaptation of people.
  • How to identify, implement and monitor restoration interventions for the climate adaptation of people.
  • The importance of implementing restoration where multiple benefits, beyond climate adaptation, can be achieved.

What You Will Gain

Participants completing this training will strengthen their knowledge of how to:

  • Use and interpret the vocabulary regarding climate change adaptation and Nature-based solutions.
  • Identify the need for climate adaptation within their project areas and geographies.
  • Identify areas where ecosystem restoration could help people adapt to climate change.
  • Prepare a theory of chance of restoration interventions providing climate adaptation benefits.
  • Use metrics and indicators to assess the impacts of restoration interventions for climate adaptation
  • Incorporate conflict-sensitivity driven by climate change into restoration projects.
  • Assess the possibility of restoration interventions to achieving benefits other than climate adaptation.
  • Connect with a community of practitioners engaged in meaningful incorporation of adaptation into their restoration work .

Training Structure

The training consists of four one- and a half hour online modules. Each session combines short presentations with guided group discussions or activities. Sessions will be recorded and made available to participants to watch at other times. Instructors will also offer office hours after each module to support deeper engagement.

  • Module 1: The importance of climate adaptation and risk analysis in a changing world
  • Module 2: Nature’s contribution to climate adaptation
  • Module 3: Identification and implementation of Nature-based Solutions for climate adaptation
  • Module 4: Monitoring Nature-based Solutions for climate adaptation

  • Starry Sprenkle‑Hyppolite, Ph.D., Senior Director, Restoration Science, Conservation International
  • Giacomo Fedele, Ph.D., Adaptation Strategy Director, Conservation International

How to Take Part

Participation is open to restoration practitioners and project managers who wish to strengthen the climate adaptation components of their work. To complete the training and receive a certificate, participants are expected to attend all four modules.

Active engagement in discussions and activities is encouraged, as peer exchange is a core element of the learning experience.
